Travelling with kids can be hard as they need to be entertained – a lot. If your children enjoy being outdoors then Santon Bridge could be the best place for a getaway with the family. Whether you go for a weekend, a short break or for several weeks in the school summer holidays, there is plenty to see and do, and the locals are so welcoming, you will surely want to return time and again.
Activities for kids
What seems like a sleepy country village is anything but that, it is the perfect base for exploring the area. Head over to Wast Water and you and your children can take part in activities such as windsurfing and kayaking. Looking for something less adrenaline-fuelled, you can hike the trails or go fishing. If you and your family like your activities to really get your blood pumping then hot air ballooning and paragliding are also on offer here. Activities like these make fantastic memories for children, and they could also learn a new skill. For water-based activities, a certain level of swimming competence might be required.
Muncaster Castle is a short drive from Santon Bridge and is a great day out for both kids and parents alike. Said to be haunted, Muncaster Castle is set in 77 acres of amazing countryside. The gardens are breathtaking and are also dog-friendly, so your four-legged family member can enjoy a day out with you. The Hawk and Owl Centre (open Feb – Dec) is a fun place for kids, although dogs are not allowed in this area. Your kids will love the bird displays and really get back to nature.
Back in Santon Bridge, there are some great walks to enjoy. The village is picturesque, literally begging to have its photograph taken or for budding young artists to get their paintbrushes out and capture its beauty on canvas.
